FAQ

Purchasing

Do you sell the same loops in more than one pack?

We do NOT sell the same loop in more than one pack! That is, if you purchase any pack, you will not get any duplicate loops. Each pack contains it's own unique loops. Each new pack we release has all new material. We DO NOT repackage the same loops in order to create more packs.

Exception: The Studio Pack and the two "Producer Packs" are collections of our individual packs:

Producer Pack 1: Rock 1, Jazz and World Beats

Producer Pack 2: Electronic, Funk/Hip Hop/RB and World Beats

Studio Pack: Blues, Country, Electronic, Funk/Hip Hop/RB, Fusion, Jazz, Metal 1, Rock 1, Progressive, Power Rock and World Beats Note: we include the FULL versions of our packs in the Studio Pack and the Producer Packs. This includes all formats as well!

Pro Tools - Strike

FAQ - Support

Compatibility Our "GM mapped" midi loops should work with Strike but you can test them by downloading our free midi pack. We currently have a download with just gm mapped loops or a full download with gm mapped loops in the folder named "other midi mappings".

Helpful Hints

There are a couple things to keep in mind when using Strike:

1) put Strike into "Kit" mode
2) set the midi channel of your Pro Tools drum track to channel 2
3) mapping: Avid states that in kit mode, Strike "follows the General MIDI convention where applicable"

If necessary, we can adjust the files if there are any mapping issues. Please contact us if you have any additional questions or need assistance.

Ableton Live support

FAQ - Support

Our "Live SD" midi loops are designed to work with the Ableton Live "Session Drums" add-on kits. However, they should work with the following kits included with Live 8:

1. Bright Room Lite Stick
2. British Vintage Lite Stick
3. British Vintage Lite Funky
4. Natural Punch Stick
5. Session Dry Lite Stick
6. Club Sizzle Lite Brush

IF you're using our Rock or Punk or Metal loops and you don't have the Live "Session Drums" add-on kits, you should try the kits listed above first.

If you're using our loops from other genres, many of the other Live 8 kits will work too. The main issue is that the standard Live 8 kits are not mapped the same so results will vary.

Apple Loop Installation

Apple Loop Installation

There are two ways to install our free Apple loops. Both methods should work for either Garage Band or Logic.

Method One
1) Unarchive the file you downloaded
2) Open Garage Band (or Logic) and open the loop browser
3) Drag the Groove Monkee folder onto the loop browser window and release. The loops should be imported and ready to use.

Method Two
1) Unarchive the file you downloaded
2) Copy the Groove Monkee folder into your Apple Loops “User Loops” folder. You will probably find your “User Loops” folder here: ~/Library/Audio/Apple Loops/User Loops
3) Reindex your Apple Loops

The advantage of the 2nd method is that you can select all of the loops in each folder as a single “collection”.

We do NOT sell Apple loops at this time. We only provide some free loops for the fun of it!

Steven Slate Drums 4.0

We currently (January 2012) have the following products available in SSD4 format:

Blues, Country, Funk/Hip Hop/RB, Fusion, Metal 1 & 2, Rock Essentials 1 & 2, Rock 1, 2 & 3, Progressive, Power Rock, Punk, RB1 and Twisted!

We're working hard to convert the rest and hope to do so by the end of January 2012.

WHERE: Our "supplemental mappings" download has loops for versions 3.5 and 4.

INSTALLATION

1. Close your host software (eg. Logic, Cubase, Sonar, etc.).

2. Move or copy our folder (ends with ".lib") into your SSD4 “Grooves” folder. This folder is located in the SSD4 “Library” folder. Do NOT move the Groove Monkee folder with “SSD4” at the end. Move the folder inside that ends with .lib!

3. Restart your host and the grooves should appear inside the groove player.

Example: If you installed SSD4 in your “G:\Programs” folder, look for something like... G:\Programs\SSD4\SSD4Library\Grooves.

IMPORTANT: At this time (1-12-2012), SSD4 Kits do NOT follow a consistent tom mapping. The kits have either 2, 3 or 4 toms. They are not mapped consistently and there are empty tom slots. For best results, you should manually fill all 4 tom slots, if necessary.

Problems? Make sure that you're using ONLY the folder(s) with .lib at the end!

BFD2 Install Problem

If you've followed our instructions and our grooves do not appear in BFD2, it is usually because you've moved BFD2 since your initial installation. IF you have moved BFD2, please follow these instructions:

1. find your current BFD2/Grooves folder (check in BFD2 preferences, if necessary). If you see two or more options, please confirm which is the current folder.
2. find the Groove Monkee BFD2 folders (check in the drive and folder you selected during the installation).
3. manually copy the Groove Monkee BFD2 folder(s) into your BFD2/Grooves folder.
4. rescan your BFD2 database.

For example, if you selected "Documents" during the install, you will find a Groove Monkee folder with product folders inside. There should be one folder for each product. Inside each product folder you will find a BFD2 folder with another folder inside (eg. "Groove Monkee Blues"). Copy this folder into your BFD2/Grooves folder.

Please contact support at groovemonkee.com if you need assistance.

NI Studio Drummer Support

NI Studio Drummer Support

These files are stored in the "supplemental mappings" zip file in folders with “Studio Drummer” in the name. These files work with the default Studio Drummer kit mappings.

Installation - Copy our Studio Drummer folder into your ‘Studio Drummer Library\MIDI Files’ folder. When you restart Studio Drummer, our loops will appear in the groove browser window.

Battery

Introduction

This document will assist you with the process of using our GM Mapped loops with Battery. These instructions were prepared using Battery 3. Other versions of Battery have not been tested yet.

If you need assistance, please contact us using the info on our "contact" page. PLEASE CHECK YOUR SPAM FOLDER FOR OUR REPLY.

Downloads (Full Products)

You need two downloads:

1. the "Extras" (kits)
2. "Supplemental Mappings" ZIP file (loops)

Note: the supplemental mappings PDF file contains instructions only.

Installation

1. Download the "Extras" folder.
2. Extract the contents and open the "Battery" folder.
3. Move or Copy the folder named “00 – Groove Monkee Kits” into your Battery Library folder.

Your Battery Library folder contains the standard Battery kit folders and samples. After copying our kit folder to your Battery library folder, start Battery and you'll see the new kits along with your other Battery kits.

MISSING SAMPLES

If Battery reports the kit samples as “missing”, please click on the button named “Search the File System”.

Groove Monkee Battery Kits

We’ve rearranged some of the standard Battery kits to work with our MIDI loops. At this time, we’ve revised most of the acoustic kits, two Electronic kits (Ate Oh Wait and Nein Oh Nein) and the Dub Remix Kit. You can also use the acoustic “GM kit” that ships with Battery. Some of our kits have percussion mapped per the GM standard: Ate Oh Wait and Nein Oh Nein, Dub Remix (partial percussion included).

Loops

Please our "GM Mapped", "single track" loops with these Battery kits (you can also use the "GM Kit" Battery supplies).

NOTE: The gm mapped loops are in the supplemental mappings ZIP download.

Note: In our "GM Mapped" folder you'll find three folders: Type 0, Single Track and Multi-Track. Multi-Track files have each kit piece on a separate track and labeled. Single track loops have all kit pieces in a single track.

Type 0: your software may prefer type 0 files. If not, please use the "single track" files.

Cubase MIDI Preview

Cubase 5 does support midi previewing (auditioning). Version 5.5 is much better than version 5.0 so you may want to upgrade!

Here's how to preview our midi drum loops in Cubase 5+:

1. Insert your drum sounds into a project (Battery, etc.)
2. Click on Menu -> Media -> Loop Browser
3. Using the Cubase browser, browse to the folder with your midi loops
4. "Connect" your drum module (step 1) in the Cubase loop browser (lower right side)
5. Select a midi groove and press "play" button (left side)
6. Drag and drop loops into a Cubase track (set the output the drum module used for previewing).

Please contact sales or support at groovemonkee for additional assistance.

Abbey Road Drums Support

Our midi drum loops are compatible with Abbey Road drums. You may use our "Studio Drummer" loops with the new Abbey Road groove browser. Copy our Studio Drummer folder(s) into your Abbey Road Library "midi files" folder and restart.

Please contact sales or support at groovemonkee.com if you need assistance.

Eco Support

Our installers now support FXpansion Eco.

Installation

Our installer should copy the midi loops into your Eco “grooves” folder automatically. After running our installer, you need to rebuild your Eco database before you can use the new loops.

1. Start Eco
2. Click on the Eco preferences ("checkbox" icon)
3. Click "Rebuild Databases"

Finding the grooves in Eco

Look in one of the Eco filter boxes (left side), select "Library" to allow searches by product name.
You can also select "Author" to search for all Groove Monkee packs.

You can select a specific Groove Monkee library and then filter by time signature, tempo, etc.

FREE MIDI: Cannot unzip the loops

Solution 1: If you cannot "unzip" our free midi drum loops, please move the download to your desktop and extract it there. You can always move the files after you've "unzipped" them.

Solution 2: If moving the file to your desktop doesn't work, please try another location such as your "program files" folder. You can always move the files after you've "unzipped" them.

Tech Note: Windows has a limit for the total length of any file name and its "path". Our download has a lot of "nested" folders and some long file names. If you're trying to extract it into a folder that's "buried deep", Windows won't extract some of our files and the extraction will fail.

Support
If you need help, please contact support at groovemonkee.com. We can send you the specific files you need (just the loops for EZdrummer, Addictive drums, Battery, Ableton Live, GM, etc.).

FREE MIDI: Password needed?

We do NOT password protect the free midi drum loops! No password is required to download or extract the loops. This seems to be a problem with Windows for SOME users.

Solutions:

1. If your system is prompting you for a password, please move the download to your desktop and extract it there.

If that doesn't work, try the "root" of one of your hard drives (eg. C:\). You can always move the files after you've "unzipped" them.

2. Rather than using Window's built-in file extractor, please try something like winzip or 7zip to unzip the files.

If you need assistance, please email support at groovemonkee.com

I hear piano and not drums!

"When I play your midi drum loops I hear a piano and not drums...why?

Try using our "GM Mapped\Single Track" loops. These drum loops are mapped to midi channel 10 which is the industry standard. Many of our loops are Type 0 files mapped to channel 1 for compatibility with certain programs. If you play those files outside of the intended program, you'll likely hear a piano.

TIP: If you are hearing piano inside of your music creation software, you should be able to change the midi channel of your drum track to match the needs of your drum sound source. Some require channel 1 while many others require channel 10. Try both if you're having problems.

If you need support, please contact us and we'll be glad to help you understand how to use our midi drum loops.

Downloads - Which files do I need?

There are usually 5 downloads for each pack (excluding the Studio Pack which has many more. It has one download for every format or mapping). These downloads are explained here.

1. PC Installer (Addictive Drums, BFD, Eco and EZdrummer and Guru if available).

Example: groove_monkee_rock2.zip

2. Mac Installer (Addictive Drums, BFD, Eco and EZdrummer and Guru if available).

Example: groove_monkee_rock2.dmg

3. Supplemental Mappings - all loops not included in our installer (including GM, Ableton Live, Battery, Imap, Reason, Steven Slate Drums, Superior Drummer, Studio Drummer, Session Drummer and more).

Example: groove_monkee_rock2_supplemental.zip

4. PDF Guide with additional info about the loops in "supplemental mappings".

File name: groove_monkee_supplemental_mappings.pdf

5. "Extras" download - no loops but other items to make your life easier.

1. drum maps for Sonar, Cubase, Reaper, Acid, etc.
2. NI Battery Kits to use with our "GM Mapped" midi loops. Instructions are included in the folder named "Battery".

File name: groove_monkee_extras.zip

Rock Packs Explained

Groove Monkee Rock Packs

All our grooves have variations and multiple groove + fill at the end. This makes it super easy to create your drum tracks! We also provide extra fills arranged by tempo for your convenience.

A. Labeling or file naming:

1. Tempo is usually at the beginning of the file name.

2. We try to name our drum loops in a descriptive way. For snare, we use terms like "displaced", "half-time", "4 feel" (motown) and"stick" for side stick; Ride articulations: "ride" and bell; HiHat: Open, Shank, 8ths, 16ths or quarters.

B. Rock Packs

1) Rock 1 - This is NOT a compilation of loops from other packs but our first rock pack. It's a variety of different rock grooves with variations and fills for each groove. Styles: Alternative, Ballad, Classic, Contemporary, Funk Rock, Hard Rock, Metal, Pop and more! Includes Over 100 alternative meter grooves and 200 intros and fills. Our "swiss army knife" collection of rock midi drum loops!

2) Rock 2 - Played by a professional studio drummer. For softer rock in song format (intro, verse, chorus, bridge, outro). Not just for ballads, it also has "alternative" sounding grooves that are not super busy or progressive. A nice mix for modern rock!

3) Rock 3 - Played by a professional studio drummer. Contemporary rock grooves in song format (intro, verse, chorus, bridge, outro). These have louder dynamics than Rock 2 while being a bit more "straight forward". However, we throw some surprises in there too!

4) Rock Essentials 1 - Played by a professional studio drummer. These are the most common, everyday rock grooves in 7 essential "feels": ballad feel with side stick, 4 on the floor, driving/quarter note, 8th note, 16th note, Floor Tom grooves and half-time. Fills arranged and labeled by tempo and type: rolls, toms, flams and builds!

5) Rock Essentials 2 - Played by a professional studio drummer. Rock and Pop midi drum loops with 7 essential feels: Shuffle, Half-Time Shuffle, Ballad - Straight (3/4, 6/8 and 12/8), Ballad - Shuffle (3/4 and 12/8), Straight 8ths, Straight and Shuffle 16ths and Driving Rock (3/4 and 6/8).

Both Rock Essentials are perfect for those users needing "straight forward" yet very useful midi drum loops.

C. Other Rock-oriented Groove Monkee packs include: Blues Rock, Punk, Progressive, Metal 2, Hard Rock 1 and Power Rock.

Studio Pack Questions

What does the Studio Pack Include?

The Studio Pack includes ALL midi drum loops from these 11 packs: Blues, Country, Electronic, Funk/Hip Hop/RB, Fusion, Jazz, Metal 1, Rock 1, Progressive, Power Rock and World Beats.

What is NOT included in the Studio Pack?

The following are NOT included in the Studio Pack: Afro-Cuban Percussion, Rock Essentials (1 and 2), Rock 2, Rock 3, Metal 2, Punk, Twisted and R&B 1.

Do you include the FULL packs or just a selection from each?

You get the FULL packs.

Are all mappings and formats available or do I have to choose?

You get ALL available mappings and formats. Please click here to see the complete list.

Can I try your midi loops before buying them?

Yes! Please click here to download loops from all of our midi drum loop packs.

Royalty Free?

Our midi drum loops are sold "royalty free".

Royalty Free - This means that you can use our midi loops in your musical productions without permission AND you do not have to pay us any additional fees, also known as "royalties".

"Musical production" means a song or "music bed", etc.

Note: you cannot repackage our midi loops in other commercial products without a written agreement. This means software and drum loops products such as audio loops or midi loops.

LICENSING - Please contact us if you'd like to license out products for commercial purposes. We currently have agreements with Cakewalk, FXpansion, Propellerhead, Linplug and Digital Music Doctor.

Quantized? What does it mean?

Our midi drum loops are NOT quantized. Here's a couple answers....

Quantization - In digital music processing technology, quantization is the process of aligning a set of musical notes to a precise setting. This results in notes being set on beats and on exact fractions of beats.

In plain English, we do not process the midi loops using software. While it would be faster for us, we don't correct the timing using software. Drum loops that have been quantized might sound "stiff" or unnatural because they line up too closely with the beats or subdivisions. The key is to produce midi drum loops that "groove" without sounding sloppy.

How many mappings and formats do you offer?

We currently offer over a dozen midi mappings and formats!

ALL available midi mappings and formats are included with each purchase. Here's the complete list of product mappings.

Note: some packs are not available in certain formats. Packs with percussion require percussion samples. For example, if you have EZdrummer, you need to have their percussion samples in order to use our percussion midi loops.

Please contact us if you have any questions...sales at groovemonkee.com.
